With new posts brewing and old favorites revisited, let’s celebrate the magic of reading and anticipate the stories yet to come in July 2024!
To Bleed a Crystal Bloom
To Bleed a Crystal Bloom was SO HYPED that I think going in I was expecting something amazing (I wasn’t asking for a masterpiece) and it just didn’t deliver. I finally decided to DNF it at 52%.
I am on team I need someone to tell me why they thought this book was good. To Bleed A Crystal Bloom was so hyped on the net and I feel like I shot myself in the foot (I don’t usually read hyped books). It had SO MUCH potential. But ultimately it left me with more questions than answers. In conjunction with all those questions, I was SO BORED. I understand that this book in theory is a foundational setup for the rest of the trilogy but NOTHING HAPPENS for the majority of the story. Laith is stuck in her routine and scared to venture outside of the safety line (and rightfully so) but when are we going to move past that 52% into the book and we’ve gotten no development, no experimentation, NOTHING!
Shadow and Storms

Shadows and Storms was the EPIC ending we deserved! I do have a full review up so make sure you check it out!
“Shadows and Storms,” the final book in The Legends of Thezmarr series, brings a wealth of emotions and a captivating story to the fantasy genre. From excitement and awe to trepidation and tears, this series has it all. Having started the series a month ago after seeing an Instagram post by Helen, the indie author, I have been completely enraptured by the journey of Thea and Wilder.
Shadow and Storms highlights their significant character development and powerful love story, which is adventurous, tragic, and passionate. Picking up where book three left off, “Shadows and Storms” promises an engaging tale with consistent and captivating writing. The battles in this final installment are more intense, and Thea’s determination to fight for her lands is palpable as her time draws to an end.
The found family aspect, featuring characters like Cal, Kipp, and Thea adds a lighthearted touch, making readers feel part of the family. The plot twists are masterfully executed, keeping readers on their toes and questioning everything they thought they knew. Helen’s storytelling prowess shines through, despite some moments being less thrilling than others.
The series stands out for its realistic character portrayals, where actions have consequences, adding depth to Thea’s heavily flawed yet relatable character. Although it’s tough to let go of such beloved characters at the end, the time spent in this richly crafted world makes it worthwhile. Helen’s ability to create strong, lovable characters ensures that The Legends of Thezmarr series is one readers will want to revisit repeatedly.
If you are wondering whether you should add this to your TBR do it!
God of Wrath
I finally decided to read book 3 in the Legacy of Gods series. And, Jeremy is UNHINGED and I LOVED EVERY MOMENT of it!
Jeremy’s character is portrayed as a complex mix of good and bad, shaped by a turbulent upbringing marked by violence. Despite his tough exterior, he shows a tender side, especially towards Cecy, whom he supports in battling their shared demons. He demonstrates sweetness and thoughtfulness, willing to go to great lengths for his loved ones, including buying Cecy special manga editions, cooking for her, and providing emotional support. Despite his overprotective and sometimes jealous nature, his loyalty and care shine through in his efforts to understand and support Cecy. This man is the definition of possessive and insecure. Does it make my favorite of the series? No. That spot still goes to Killian Carson but JEREMY! ButWhew!
Evocation

“Evocation” follows David as he turns to his ex-boyfriend, Rhys, for help in a desperate situation, leading to an uneasy alliance against dark forces. Set against an urban fantasy backdrop, this first installment by a bestselling author starts with a rough narrative flow but evolves into a captivating tale of intricate relationships, magical intrigue, and the looming presence of the Devil. The story blends friendship and romance drama with a unique use of tarot, unraveling curses, and evolving character dynamics. While light on plot, it excels in character development, particularly with David’s rough edges and Rhys’s stubborn reluctance to rekindle their past romance. “Evocation” is ultimately a character-driven romance with fantasy elements, offering a compelling read for fans of contemporary gothic novels and magical narratives.
The Lyonesse Trilogy
I am obsessed with this trilogy. There will be a full review coming soon so be on the lookout for it. I suggest starting with the prequel Salt in the Wound and it will add incredible context going into book 1 Salt Kiss! This is a reimagining of Tristan and Isolde and it is so good! Book 3 Bitter Burn doesn’t come out until 2025! Sierra PLEASE! I NEED Bitter Burn!
House of Earth and Blood

“House of Earth and Blood,” the first book in Sarah J. Maas’ Crescent City series and her adult fiction debut, offers a mature and edgy narrative with a dark, murderous vibe. The story follows Bryce’s investigation into her best friend Danika’s murder, blending themes of grief and vengeance across the city of Luthanion. While the book stands out with excellent character development and a richly detailed world, it suffers from a slow start and an overly long, sometimes convoluted plot. Despite these flaws, the emotional depth and eventual payoff make it an enjoyable read, though it could have benefited from tighter pacing
House of Sky and Breath

I have a full review of both House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath up. Make sure you check it out.
Unlike the slow start of “House of Earth and Blood,” “House of Sky and Breath” immediately hooked me and proved to be the superior installment in the Crescent City series so far. Bryce continues to navigate the loss of Danika and her strained relationship with her biological father. The character development, particularly for Hunt Athalar, Tharion Ketos, and Ruhn Danaan, is outstanding. The story is filled with satisfying twists, complex plots, and subplots that keep the pace exciting and engaging.
The romance between Hunt and Bryce Quinlan is steamy but not overly graphic, adding a rich layer to the epic urban fantasy narrative. The book ends on a high note with a jaw-dropping finale that leaves you craving more. Overall, “House of Sky and Breath” is a masterful blend of character development, plot twists, and romance, making it a must-read in the urban fantasy genre.
The Musician and the Monster
Unfortunately, very early in I had to DNF The Musician and the Monster. I wanted to love it but it was just too slow with nothing captivating or engaging in the story. It is a Beauty and the Beast retelling so if you like that sort of thing you should try it out. Maybe it will work for you!
Den of Vipers
After having it on my mind REPEATEDLY! I did a reread of Den of Vipers this month and I still am obsessed with these men. My second time around I think I found a favorite in Garrett but honestly wouldn’t turn any of them away if they knocked on my door. Well, maybe Captain Crazy. Just like my first read, I finished it and immediately wanted to reread it. I have a full review titled Come Into the Den: ‘Den of Vipers’ by K.A. Knight check it out.
God of Fury
If I had to pick one of my favorite books read this month it would be God of Fury. I wrapped up the month with God of Fury. This book was an exhilarating rollercoaster, capturing the intense push and pull between Niko and Bran. Full of tears, swooning and gasping! From the start, I rooted for Bran and adored Niko. The unique dynamic of an “obsessed sunshine” character was refreshing and delightful. Bran’s grumpy perfection added to the charm. Rina, please write more MM romances because this one was phenomenal! The spice was perfectly written, making the story even more enjoyable. I savored every moment and wanted more. And I did it as an immersive read with an audiobook and ebook (do yourself a favor and listen)!
