For Readers Who Crave Emotional Impact

Reviews that go beyond the surface

You don’t want another five-star review of a three-star book. You want the books that actually tighten your chest. The ones that linger for days. The ones worth your time.

That’s the only kind of book that gets reviewed here.

Across fantasy, romance, literary fiction, and dark stories that refuse to let go, every review is written through one lens: did it leave a mark? If it didn’t, it doesn’t earn five stars here.

No fluff. No spoilers. No surface-level hype. Just your trusted neighborhood book blogger telling you which ones will wreck you.🖤

If you’re tired of recommendations that don’t deliver, you’re in the right place.

how it works

Never waste a read again.

one

Tell me what just wrecked you.

Browse by genre — dark romance, romantasy, fiction, thrillers — and find the books that match what you’re craving next.

two

I’ll be honest, even when it hurts.

Real reviews. No fluff, no spoilers, no inflated ratings. The good, the bad, and the stick-with-it-until-52%.

three

Shop the ones worth your time.

Every rec links straight to indie bookstores so you can support small shops while building your TBR. Skip the slump. Skip the regret.

DIARY OF A READER

Hi, I’m Dominique! Your bookish bestie🖤

Mother of three, lifelong reader, and the person who’s going to make sure you never waste a read again.

I started The Diary of a Reader because I was tired of five-star reviews of three-star books. Tired of hype that doesn’t deliver. Tired of finishing a book and feeling… nothing.

So I built a space for readers like us. The ones who want to be wrecked. Who read for the chest-tightening, all-day, lingering, can’t-stop-thinking-about-it kind of stories.

If a book doesn’t leave a mark, it doesn’t earn five stars here.

Welcome in. Let’s find the next one that ruins you.

START FEELING EVERY STORY

Books That Don’t Fade When You Finish Them

This isn’t a space for surface-level recommendations. Every review here is written with intention, examining emotional resonance, character depth, and the kind of storytelling that lingers.

Whether you’re searching for emotionally devastating books, immersive literary fiction, dark romance that isn’t for the faint of heart, or cross-genre stories that leave a lasting impression, you’ll find thoughtful, in-depth reviews designed to help you choose your next unforgettable read.

If emotional intensity matters to you more than hype, you’re exactly where you should be.

WORK WITH ME

Looking for honest, emotionally engaged reviews from a reader who takes books seriously, and an audience that does too?

I partner with authors, publishers, and PR teams to bring thoughtful, in-depth reviews to readers who care about character, craft, and emotional impact, not just star ratings. Romance, fantasy, literary fiction, thrillers, horror, if your book is built to move readers, my audience is built to read it.

I took a half star away from Slayer because Stella I took a half star away from Slayer because Stella was fking infuriating. And now I'm wondering if I should give it back. 🤔 ⭐️ 4.5/5 There's something ridiculously satisfying about picking up a book and expecting, at minimum, a good time and realizing a few chapters in that you're completely hooked. That was Slayer by Leia Stone Vampires. A secret academy. A broody vampire hunter. A heroine discovering that the supernatural world is very, very real and that she was born into it. Yeah, I was in. But nostalgia isn't actually what earned this one 4.5 stars. The writing is ridiculously easy to fall into, the plot kept slipping in smaller mysteries that made me more curious the further I read, and the worldbuilding made Veil Haven feel like a real city with its own history rather than a backdrop that exists solely because the story needed somewhere to happen. And honestly, yeah, Slayer is YA, but it never felt like YA to me. It gave me that addictive feeling of the vampire books I used to devour without making me feel like I'd outgrown the story. Then there was Stella. Girl. GIRL. She was f*cking infuriating in the beginning. But somehow, along the way, she started allowing herself to consider that maybe everything wasn't exactly as she believed it was. She started letting people in. She found people she genuinely liked and began realizing that maybe she wasn't quite as alone as she'd convinced herself she was. which leaves me with a problem... if the thing that cost Slayer half a star became part of the character arc I actually appreciated, do I owe Leia Stone her half a star back? Would Stella get her half star back from you? Thank you to @leiastoneauthor for sending me a copy of Slayer to read and review. I can't wait for Staked! 📖 Full review is on The Diary of a Reader #Slayer #LeiaStone #VampireBooks #VampireRomance #YAParanormal
What's a book ending that genuinely ruined you for What's a book ending that genuinely ruined you for a few days? and do you think it should have ended differently, or was the pain the point? My pick would be Neurovance. It's the kind of ending that is bittersweet, but it was PERFECT. I cried so hard my son thought something was wrong. All I could say in between racking sobs is no, nothing is wrong. then go back to wailing🥺. It's been months, and if I think about the ending, tears are still well up in my eyes. Even now, writing this, I want to cry. Meet me at the pond 🐸 #Neurovance #AlexandraStPierre #MMTechnothriller #romance #MMromancebooks
Your September TBR is about to get out of control, Your September TBR is about to get out of control, and honestly, so is mine. So many of my most anticipated are releasing this month:
🌙 The Knave and the Moon
🎀 Daddy's Girl
💀 Grim Tidings
🏴‍☠️ Tempest
🧛‍♀️ Crown of Crimson and Crows
🪄 The Court of Venus
🔥 Burn of the Everflame Thankfully, NetGalley let me get my greedy little reader hands on some of them early. But those aren't the only books on my September TBR 👀 Swipe to see what else is releasing this month and prepare to add a few more books to your Neverending TBR... #netgalley #fantasybooks #septembernewreleases #newbookreleases #newreads
What's harder to forgive: a boring ending, a weak What's harder to forgive: a boring ending, a weak middle, or an annoying character? If I had to choose just one, I would say an annoying character. Characters for me make or break a story. If I am annoyed the entire time, then I can't really enjoy what I am experiencing, and if I'm not enjoying it, what's the point? White Lights definitely had annoying characters and a weak middle, and after a while, I didn't care enough to continue (honestly, the entire thing wasn't my cup of tea) 😒 So what are you choosing? #whitelights #annoyingcharacters #angelsanddemons #laurenkate
Tell me an author whose entire blacklist you've re Tell me an author whose entire blacklist you've read. I'll go first: Tessa Hale. I am completely caught up on every single one of her series, and now I'm FOAMING AT THE MOUTY waiting for Throne of Traitors and Thorns. Because after THAT ending??? Waiting until February is going to be torture. I love Tessa's writing, and Crown of Crimson and Crows was no different. Her books are just so dumb easy to get lost in. You pick up one, and suddenly you've been reading for hours. The worldbuilding? Top tier. Always. The spice? Gets hotter as the series goes on 👀 And somehow, every series makes me think, okay, THIS one might be my favorite. 😍 Except I genuinely couldn't choose a favorite Tessa Hale series if you made me. I love them all SO MUCH! And now Crown of Crimson and Crows has joined the problem. 👑 But there's a LOT more I have to say about Crowns of Crimson and Crows, especially that ending 👀 My full spoiler free review is on my blog. link in bio Who's entire blacklist have you read? #bloodboundseries #tessahale #crownofcrimsonandcrows #bookreview
You only get to choose your next read based on onl You only get to choose your next read based on only ONE thing: premise, first page, cover, author, or someone's recommendation. What are you trusting? For me, it would be the author. There are authors that I have read their entire catalog, and they have yet to let me down. There are authors that I know immediately, if they put it out, I will read it, no questions asked *grabby hands* just give it to me. Pre-order made at the time of announcement and patiently wait for my book to show up on my doorstep. #darkromcombooks #darkromance #thrillerbooks #bookstagram #readinglife
Happy Release Day to King of War by @sadie_kincaid Happy Release Day to King of War by @sadie_kincaidxx There's nothing like being in Sadie's world. 🖤 King of War felt equally entirely familiar yet completely new. At the center are Rayne and Enzo, who have the kind of history that makes calling this a second chance romance too simple for what they are together. Friends to lovers. Lovers to enemies. Years of hurt, resentment, betrayal, secrets, and feelings, neither of them are quite ready to deal with. And the TENSION. The banter. The yearning. The I hate you but unfortunately I'm obsessed with you energy. Chefs 💋 kiss Sadie has always had a way of writing relationships that feel completely all consuming, and Rayne and Enzi are no exception. Add in perfect pacing that keeps the story moving, characters you'll be obsessed with, and a mafia world you could easily fall into, and you will have an amazing time. Because I know I did. If you live dark mafia romance, enemies to lovers, second chance romances, and complicated characters who absolutely should have moved on but clearly didn't, King of War should be on your TBR. 4.5 ⭐️ Thank you, Sadie, for the ARC. I can't wait for book two. #kingofwar #sadiekincaid #secondchanceromance #mafiaromance #enemiestolovers
Slow burn or instant connection: Which do you actu Slow burn or instant connection: Which do you actually read faster because you can't stop? I like a happy medium in my books. I don't want it to be an instant connection (because what's the point you know 😕). But I also don't want it to be such a slow burn that we're waiting for the match to dry before we can light it. Give me tension. Give me the almost. But also give me payoff before I'm 80 🕯 Basically: I want to suffer, but on a schedule. What's your threshold? and give me recs! #slowburnbooks #FantasyReads #fantasyromance #booksbooksbooks
Do you buy books based on their covers? Because I Do you buy books based on their covers? Because I have a COVER REVEAL I am so excited to reveal the stunning cover of the @ramonasantos_author Ghost Particle created by @edward_bettison Ghost Particle is a dystopian fantasy set in the near future where everyone has superpowers, well everyone except Olivia. She is powerless and is just trying to keep her job filing paperwork. That is until she becomes wanted by both the military AND a band of assassins (girl, you gotta get out of there 😂). The fact that Olivia is getting new powers would be helpful if they weren't triggered exclusively by the bounty hunter hired to protect her. Want early access? ARC team applications are NOW OPEN. Head to the link in @rattlethestarspr bio. Sign ups will be open until 8/30, and you do not need to be an RTSPR influencer to apply Ghost Particle will be released on October 13th, and pre-orders are currently available on Amazon! #RamonaSantos #CoverReveal #Dystopian #DystopianFantasy #IndieAuthor
Hot take, which trope is WAY more interesting that Hot take, which trope is WAY more interesting that people give it credit for? We can all agree on the classic book tropes like enemies to lovers, found family, or even fake dating. But one trope that people don't give enough credit is The Quest... I honestly dont even know if most think of this as a trope. Do you? #tropes #readinglife #thediaryofareader #reading
