The Epic Ending We All Deserved!
I don’t think there are enough words to truly justify what Shadow and Storms bring to the fantasy table. I could gush and gush about The Legends of Thezmarr books. The excitement, the trepidation, the tears, the awe. This series brings out all the emotions I love to experience when reading a good story.
I started the series just over a month ago when I saw a post on Instagram where Helen was saying how important reviews are for indie writers like herself. From that point, I have been enraptured by Thea and Wilder. If you haven’t read my review of Blood and Steel: The Best Underrated Fantasy You Canât Miss, DO IT).
As this is the final book in the series, I want this to be SPOILER-FREE. I won’t give too much away.
What I can say is Thea and Wilder have come a long way throughout the pages of this series. Their character development is top-tier. Their love story is a story for the ages. It is a saga, and tragic at times. Adventurous and lustful in others. We get to see how much they mean to each other and all of the things they are willing to go through just to be together. We see this even more so in Shadow and Storms.
“Eyes on Me, Thea, he commanded. I need to watch you come apart. I need to see it.”
Shadow and Storms continues right where book three drops off. The first few chapters promise a tale that you won’t have trouble sinking into, like the rest of the series. With the writing style throughout the series being consistent and captivating. Although through the series there are battles, I find the ones in Shadow and Storms to be amped up just a notch. Thea realizes that her time is drawing to an end and throws her all into battling for the lands.
The found family is equally as good. Giving a lighthearted air to the story, making you aware that you are a part of the family right along with Cal, Kipp, Wren, and Thea.
Not to mention the PLOT TWISTS! There are moments when you shout WHAT?! and gasp because you never saw it coming. Helen is masterful with her writing. Convincing you that it’s one thing and then dropping a bomb on you. Having you question everything you thought you knew.
“You’re mine, he told her, teasing her nipples, slamming into her to the hilt. You always have been.”
All of the threads weaving together to make an engrossing epic tale. While some of the threads don’t glimmer as much as others do. Helen’s overall prowess for storytelling takes a front seat to the slightly lackluster moments.
There are parts of me that love and hate Helen’s writing (no not for the reasons you may think). Simply for the fact that there are always consequences in her writing. I honestly think even Wilder makes a statement to Thea at some point that there are consequences to her actions. I say I hate this (I don’t hate it) because I read to escape in a sense. No, I don’t want the characters to be perfect but Thea is heavily flawed. She is almost a real person. Some moments are downright disturbing (or would be looking through everyone else’s eyes). But I must admit just as much as there is that dislike for those parts there is incredible loving for those same parts. Helen isn’t afraid to break your heart and tear it into pieces.
“Gods, Wilder murmured. How is it that you feel so good and I’m not even inside you yet?”
One of the hardest things is finding a book or series that you love is having to let the characters go at the end of it all. What makes it all the more wonderful is the time that you get to spend in the world, experiencing the characters, and making a new book boyfriend. Helen created such strong and lovable characters that you will want to read The Legends of Thezmarr series again and again. And it makes it even more better that the story doesn’t end here.
