Synopsis
When Jade’s beloved grandfather dies she has no choice but to move her life from the town of Coos Bay to the grand gilded mansion of Blythe mansion with an aunt she never knew existed.
As Jade adjusts to her new life and a new private school, she struggles to navigate the social hierarchy that divides her friends, The Misfits, from the popular crowd of jocks and cheerleaders. When she meets the charming rugby captain, Bradley Phillips, she experiences falling in love for the first time—or so she thinks.
When Jade finds a cursed locket connected to a ghost named William, her life turns in an unexpected direction. While aiding Will in his quest to cross into the afterlife, Jade discovers a deep connection between them that goes far beyond what she could ever imagine.
My Thoughts on Grove Hollow
I initially found Grove Hollow on Instagram. The story promised an alluring tale. And when I found out that the soulmate was a ghost I shouted Sign me up!
Grove Hollow is a mix of the best 80s moments with a splash of dark academia and an intriguing mystery.
The story was beautiful.
Jade was a great FMC. She was full of emotions and had great character development. She’s relatable and endearing. Navigating the challenges of not only losing the only person she has ever known. But, finds her place in a new school that feels she’s a freak for the friends she hangs out with. And, coming into her own when it comes to things like romance. Having her first kiss, and completely giving herself over to the boy she loves.
While it did take me some time to get into the story, the writing style is beautiful. You are easily transported into the 1980s, with the immense detail given in Grove Hollow. There are songs, movie references, and fashion described to add to that old-school feel.
My favorite character would ironically be Jade’s Aunt Ruth. She is eccentric and crazy. Deemed the witch. But, beyond that, she is caring and understanding. Giving Jade sage advice and all around to support her needs. Even though she always has a cocktail in her hands and a cigarette on her lips.
Will is the perfect counterpart for Jade. Although he is a ghost he still finds ways to put her first. It is beautiful to see that through a twist of fate, they find their ways to each other being what one another needs.
Overall, the book would have to be 3.5 stars for me. The ending was the perfect way to lead to book two. The story was absolutely beautiful, the mystery keeps you guessing, and you will find yourself smiling throughout the tale. I am excited to continue the story for book two.
