Meet your next favorite read in Samantha Ziegler’s debut novel Of Bones of Skulls. In Of Bones and Skulls, when the king of Rhodan is mysteriously assassinated, his Lieutenant Killian Southwick is tasked with bringing down the killer! Killian is a force to be reckon with in his own right, driven by his loyalty to the fallen King Cyril. He will do whatever it takes, even if it means teaming up with the likes of Elyse Crenshaw.
Elyse, although guarded, is one of the most powerful witches in the kingdom. And, she wants nothing to do with Killian Southwick—or anyone for that matter. But when Killian makes an offer Elyse can’t refuse in exchange for one week’s worth of her help, she agrees (although be it begrudgingly).
After getting off to a less-than-friendly start, Elyse and Killian learn to work together. But secrets and pasts threaten to overturn the bond and respect they’ve built for one another. Nothing is as it seems!
Genre: Fantasy, Romance
My Thoughts on of bones and Skulls
It’s just a little truth serum
When the book opens the prologue really captures your attention. The King of Rhodan is murdered in the night and Killian is tasked with finding who killed him by such unconventional means. As I headed into the first section of the book my interest waned, feeling like the downslope of the rollercoaster(almost like it’s prompting for that high again). And that it did because I was taken into a whirlwind of a story once I got past that low point.
Okay, I have to gush about this book a little. Of Bones and Skulls was truly EVERYTHING! I had such a good time reading it after all that. Killian is such a grumpy boots starting off. The more involved he gets with Elyse the more he warms and softens. And, the same for Elyse she has such a hard outer shell that when Killian comes along she doesn’t know what to do with herself. It was so cute.
Air was nothing. Water was nothing. She was everything.
I loved watching their feelings and relationship develop the angst between the two was just WOW! SO GOOD! That is literally all I kept saying while reading it’s SO GOOD!
I have so many thoughts but about 70% of them are spoilers, so I’ll leave them in my head FOR NOW!
I loved that Elyse was strong and not weak and timid. She can hold her own against the men (and quite literally does it). She is snarky, quick-witted, and just an all-around badass! The added layer of trauma that Elyse battles every moment in the decisions she makes, adds to her character.
“You are the strongest, most fierce woman I have ever met,” he began. “I need you to know that you take my breath away every moment of every day. My heart is completely yours.”
The enemies-to-lovers trope is one of my favorite tropes and Of Bones and Skulls had that in spades. I do wish the slow burn was a little more drawn out. Some parts felt rushed and with almost 400 pages it wouldn’t have been much more to stretch it out a little. I do also wish that there were more spicy parts to the storyline. Not necessarily more graphic just additionally more.
The writing was beautiful, however, there are moments when the writing was choppy, and didn’t flow as smoothly as it should. Those moments were very few so it didn’t take away from the reading experience overall but were there.
Contrastly, I never saw the plot twist coming! Audibly gasping because it was set up so well that you wouldn’t have known! And the CLIFFHANGER OMG! I just loved this story. The second book is such a NEED! YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. It is currently free on Kindle Unlimited or you can pick up the paperback of Of Bones and Skulls on Amazon!
Happy Reading Readers!
