Control Book Summary
For Natalie Covington and Henry Thorne things are about to get out of control.
Natalie is an ambitious girl with very little control over her life. She’s trapped at an elite boarding school on a private island, cell phones are forbidden, guards line the iron gates, and her boyfriend has eyes for another girl.
Everything changes when a mysterious new student arrives named Henry Thorne. Henry is a “precog”—a hidden society of people who can see the future, and who are forbidden to reveal their powers. When Henry has a grisly vision of Natalie being murdered, he ultimately decides to save her and face the consequences. But the consequences of changing the future are more dangerous than Henry imagined, unlocking a wide conspiracy among his kind that’s linked to Natalie’s past, and a desire that threatens to consume them.
Lose Control in this Review
Control is the first installment in The Lockwood Trilogy. This fast-paced New Adult Paranormal Romance is filled with thrilling turns, entrancing you from the first sentence.
Natalie Covington and Henry Thorne are seniors at the prestigious Lockwood Academy. Lockwood is located on a private island on the Washington state coastline.
We follow Natalie, she really has no control over her life, everything is decided for her. Even her boyfriend Jack has been decided for her by their respective families. After an unexpected encounter with a mysterious student, Natalie starts to get a feeling like something is off. The mysterious stranger has ensnared her attention and despite being separated at every turn she can’t let go.
I have to say that I LOVED Control. It was such a fun read. Often when I am reading, especially when it is a great story I see the story as a movie in my head. This tends to give me the desire to want to see it in either a TV show or movie. With that being said Control would make a great series or movie. It totally makes sense that Cassera is a screenwriter.
Control is written in the first person. The story alternates between Natalie’s and Henry’s perspectives. In addition to its pacing, the navigation of the story effectively propels the plot forward. Integrating friendship, romance, and self-identity as it plots the journey to self-discovery.
More Thoughts
While reading the story it feels like it can be any story. Giving a generic feel. Henry has psychic abilities but it initially feels like there isn’t any more to the storyline. As the story unfurls and you get deeper, there of course is much more to the tale. Both Natalie and Henry develop much deeper than the surface level. Henry finds his way through his psychic abilities and Natalie uncovers secrets she never thought could be true. Only adding to the enrichment of the plot.
The first half of the book focuses on their introduction to each other and finding their way to one another. It also introduces the idea of “precogs”, which are people who have premonitions of the future, who however cannot interfere with their visions. As you get further into the second half of the story you understand when it means a little more and the consequences of Henry’s actions.
Often at times, the slow burn feels like it is moving like molasses. Henry is exactly the type of brooding man with a secret good heart that I easily fall in love with. But, there were moments when I was screaming get together already. Or at least be more civilized to each other. It felt like every time they crossed the bridge to develop something further for one another they were dragged back 10 paces, it was frustrating.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Control gets 4.5/4.75 stars. It was well-paced and developed. Beyond the minor issues I had with the story, I had such a good time reading it. The characters were lovable and the writing was fantastic! It ended on a cliffhanger, and all I have to say is bring on book two!
