It’s All About (The) My Bookish Favorites Tag

Hello Reader! One of the things that I love is the bookish community. If I were to ever start a YouTube channel (I have been thinking about it, but my anxiety won’t let me!), it would definitely be a booktube. And the main focus would definitely be reviews and book tags. I love a good book tag. So I thought it was time to do the first book tag of the year and this time a bookish favorites tag! This is the first one that I have ever created myself. I hope that you both like it, do it, and tag others in it also!
Let the Bookish Favorites Tag begin…
1. What is your favorite book of all time?
My NUMBER ONE all-time favorite book would definitely have to be drum roll please (yes I am dramatic lol) The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I read this book for the first time 2 years ago (2021) and I fell head over heels for this book. I always say that it owns a mansion on acres in my mind. Ok, enough gushing.
If you don’t know The Starless Sea follows Zachary Ezra Rawlins. When he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks of the library he is bewildered. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood.
Zachary uncovers a series of clues—a bee, a key, and a sword—that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds is more than just a place that he has read in a book. As he uncovers the magical world discovering its secrets and revealing some of his own, Zachary realizes there is so much more to The Starless Sea.
2. Who is your favorite author and why?
When I think of my favorite authors only two names really hit the forefront of my mind. Not that I don’t have other favorites but these come to mind first. Those two are Erin Morgenstern and Mara Rutherford. This may not be surprising after the way I gushed all over The Starless Sea.
It is not often that I feel something when reading a story (like really feel something) enough to want to reread a story multiple times ( I am like on reread number 5 of The Starless Sea in 2 years) and all of Mara’s books I could read an innumerable amount of times. I say that to say that each time I read and reread these authors’ books I feel something like it is the first time! AND I LOVE THAT!
3. What is your favorite genre and why?
I love this bookish favorites question and knew I had to add it to the list. Lately, my favorite genre has been fantasy. Like many readers I read in order to escape and fantasy allows me to do that. The world-building and character development take enough mental capacity that I don’t have to worry about what’s going on in my life at that moment.
4. What is your favorite book cover?
I added this to the bookish favorites tag just to see all of the pretty covers! My favorite book cover is the Fairyloot edition of Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan. It is absolutely gorgeous and the digital edges elevate so much to the beauty of this book. It is not often that you get a yellow book and when it is done so well the way that it is done in Heart of the Sun Warrior, I just don’t think I could have chosen another book.
5. What is your favorite book-to-movie adaptation?
Does it count if I didn’t like the book? The book was incredibly boring but the movie was even better ( I only chose this because it was based on a book and it’s one of my favorite movies) ok, ok, enough stalling, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Every time I watch this movie I remember why I love, love. I quote the movie ( you know the part!) and I cry like a baby. This is my favorite book to movie adaptation but I dislike the book. The book is nothing like the movie, AT ALL. It lacks the nuisance and romance that the movie gives. I will stick with the movie and put it on my bookish favorites book tag list.
6. What is your favorite book quote?
“Happiness can be found even in the DARKEST OF TIMES if one only remembers to turn on the light” – Albus Dumbledore
“Always” – Severus Snape
While I do not like or accept JK Rowling’s stance on anything, I am a Harry Potter STAN! I grew up on Harry Potter. I remember staying up late, under my sheet with a flashlight, sneaking to read one more chapter before my parents found out. It saddens me that she takes this view on people who are just trying to exist!
7. What is your favorite bookstore/library?
Ok, I am going to do a little shameless plugging here. My favorite bookstore is mine (wink, wink!) Currently, I am transferring onto my online store here on The Diary of a Reader (Coming Soon) but you can check out what I have to offer for the time being on Pangobooks. Pangobooks is also a really good site overall for finding great quality books for a really good price. Even if you don’t purchase something off of my page check it out!
8. What is your favorite bookish merchandise item?
How can you do a bookish favorites tag and not include your favorite bookish merch item? Honestly, this one is hard to choose if I am thinking in terms of things I can use for my bookstagram then art prints. If I am thinking personally then without a doubt it would have to be mugs! I am obsessed with mugs. Every day I have a cup of coffee, tea, or both.
9. What is your favorite bookish subscription box?
The favorite bookish tag wouldn’t be complete without a favorite bookish subscription box question. If we are talking book editions alone lately I have been gravitating toward The Bookish Box. Their editions are stunning and books that I don’t see everyone doing. They are typically complete redesigns and not just a color change or sprayed/digital edges. There are some instances though where The Bookish Box has made some big mistakes though and hasn’t owned up to them and we don’t like that! ACCOUNTABILITY is KEY!
10. What is your favorite bookish memory?
The final bookish favorites tag question/answer is this. My favorite bookish memory (and this one may seem odd) is my mom locking me out of the house to play. Except I didn’t go out to play I took my book and sat on the porch until I heard the click of her unlocking the door, letting me know it was ok for me to come back in.
It is one of the few good memories I have of my childhood. And as a mother, I understand the need for peace and quiet for a little while. She knew I wouldn’t actually go and play but she needed me out of the house for an hour to have some time to herself to do whatever it was that she needed. Whenever I think about this it makes me smile.
So that’s it! The bookish favorites book tag! I hope you enjoyed my answers to this tag. Do we have the same favorite book or author? What’s your favorite bookish merch item?
