We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
As bookworms, we can all agree that the worlds we choose to immerse ourselves in are worlds we love to read. Ultimately, choosing to stay in all day. But, with our love of reading comes, well some annoyances, so here are some of the biggest bookish pet peeves that we readers experience!
From minor inconveniences to specific tropes that always get under our skin, these bookish pet peeves are sure to resonate with you. Are any of these on your list of bookish pet peeves? Sound off in the comments below!
1. When Someone is Talking to You While You are Reading!
This has to be number one of any reader’s bookish pet peeves. Being interrupted while reading, or just talking to me in general while I’m reading. At least wait until I’ve finished the sentence preferably the chapter!
2. Stickers on the Front of Books!
Why!? Just why. No one, absolutely no one in the bookish community has said yeah I’ve loved that sticker they put on that book. If I am buying a book I don’t particularly care that it is a Netflix series, or having a sale (that isn’t really a sale), or anything in between. I want them to get the memo, we don’t want those stickers!
3. The Miscommunication Trope
Coming in the third spot is the miscommunication trope. This had to be on the bookish pet peeves list because from the poll we took on our Instagram @diaryofthereader, this trope coupled with the third act break up is one of the readers’ biggest bookish pet peeves because why not just talk!? When two grown adults can’t sit down and have an open conversation it gives off major flags on the play???!
4. Terrible Plot Twists/Terrible Books with great Twists
Nothing is worse than a book with either a terrible twist and the book has been wonderful up until that point. Or you get a book that’s the worst and when you get to the end the twist was mind-blowing ?. Now we all know that reading is completely subjective and sometimes this happens but when it does it’s the worse!

5. Insta love/Love Bombing
Another red flag ?is love bombing and insta love in books. Give me the slow burn. When the characters fall in love within five minutes of knowing each other it’s like um breath a minute. Slow-burn loves are always better anyway. The build-up that it creates is so satisfying once the couple finally joins!
6. Over-emphasis on appearance
Next, is the over-emphasis on appearance. Of course, you have to be descriptive in text, to allow for imagery. She is tall and thin. She is thick and buxom, but when there is an over-emphasis to the point where it doesn’t add any value than what’s the point?
7. Long Chapters!
Additionally, on the bookish pet peeves list is long chapters. Long chapters give this sense of drawing out the story. Give me short chapters. It allows for a sense of reward and leaves me wanting to read more continuing on with the story.

8. Enemies to Lovers but they aren’t Enemies
A bookish pet peeve for all readers alike is enemies to lovers that aren’t really enemies. A lot of this is marketing. Companies are using things emotional indifference as enemies to lovers in order to sell books and that isn’t right! Enemies to lovers you should have true hatred toward each other then slowly warm up and become lovers.
9. I’m the best! But we never actually see it!
A bookish pet peeve in itself is when a book tells me something instead of showing me something. It is just weird that a character tells you how they are the best at something but never shows you what they are good at. Not a single time. So show me you are the greatest because if you don’t I’ll think you talk a good game but that’s all I’ll think you’re just talk.
10. When Books in the Same Series/Set Are Different Sizes
Lastly, what’s the point of a matched set if the books aren’t uniform in size? Why do publishers even do this? It irks everyone in the bookish community’s nerves! This is why it’s on this bookish pet peeves list! It’s ugly on our shelves and is just going to annoy you every time you see it. I know they want us to buy the new edition. But please, publishers, no more series with different sizes!
