Why Is Daisy Jones and the Six The Most Trending Thing Now?

For the last few months, Daisy Jones & the Six has been everywhere. And with the adaptation of the same name (Daisy Jones and the Six) released on Amazon Prime in March, the train to Daisy Town has no view of slowing down.
But whatever happened to Daisy Jones and the Six? You have to admit that they were an iconic rock band at the height of rock and roll in the 1970s. Topping the charts and selling out stadiums across the globe.
Listening to this book in the audio format was an experience. Jenkins Reid takes a unique approach to devolving the breakup of this fictional band. Offering a narrative of composed transcribed interviews told to the journalist. Frontman Billy Dunne is the center of it all. As the lead singer of the starting group the Dunne brothers evolved into the beloved Daisy Jones and the Six. Billy battles with himself throughout the entire story. A recovering addict and hopeful family man Billy just wants to make the right moves and be the best man, he can be.
Then there is sexy soulful Daisy Jones who is a badass that does whatever she wants. From her formative years, she was partying in clubs and doing drugs. So joining a band like the Six seemed like a no-brainer. The sultry soulful voice that she brought to the table, coupled with the ease she brought to the lyrics is just what the Six needed. When Daisy joins the band, the group launches into stardom.
Naturally, things become so tense between Daisy and Billy. Resulting in long stretches where they don’t even look or talk to each other. Daisy is a free spirit that refuses to just be a soldier and fall in line, letting Billy make all the choices. This not only infuriates Billy to no end but also strikes a chord with other band members. Including Eddie (who comes across as incredibly bitter).
But loving somebody isn’t perfection and good times and laughing and making love. Love is forgiveness and patience and faith and every once in a while, it’s a gut punch. That’s why it’s a dangerous thing when you go loving the wrong person. When you love somebody who doesn’t deserve it. You have to be with someone that deserves your faith and you have to be deserving of someone else’s. It’s sacred.
The tension increasingly mounts between Billy and Daisy, growing more complicated. Underneath all of this Daisy is falling in love with Billy but he is incredibly, fiercely loyal to his wife Camila. Referring to her as his water because you need only water to live, and writing multiple songs about her. Camila is no lost duck, she is fully cognizant of the love blooming between the two, staking her claim for her husband in a way any wife would.
Do you know what you do with that level of trust? When someone says, “I trust you so much I can tolerate you having secrets”?
The crux of the story is how the addition of Daisy to The Six. Forever altered the chemistry of the band, for better and in turn worse. There is great buildup around answering the big question of what happened at their final concert together, though you ultimately will be let down by the answer.
Audio Review
From the start of the audio, I knew that the audiobook was the best way to ingest Daisy Jones and the Six. Jenkins Reid’s strength has proven to lie in her ability to write realistic characters, giving the relationship a true feel. Taking you through a journey throughout the book. I refuse to believe this is a work of fiction and that these people don’t exist.
The story has a unique storytelling format, a life story, a notorious historical setting, a sultry main character, and a tumultuous relationship. It’s one of those books that will have you checking Google to see if the band was real and you have no doubt it is. You have no doubt because the book feels so real. That’s how perfectly constructed these characters are.
Taylor’s writing skills in Daisy Jones and the Six shines. And overall, when it comes to her writing, she is the best at writing realistically imperfect relationships. Having a full cast truly draws you in and keeps you engaged. The storyline and plot were so well laid, hitting details that had me hanging on the edge of my seat.
The only thing that would have made this experience better would be to hear the songs as they are being sung.
Daisy Jones and the Six is a rock band!
I am a music lover. More so, I love melodic old-school rock bands, and I love upbeat pop and smooth r&b. Music is of course, at the forefront of this book and when you hear Daisy Jones and the Six in audio format you just know you will be drawn in. But when you read the synopsis you don’t think it would be much more than a rock band book. And definitely, something that would feel so personal at times. Giving introspection, and leaving you thinking.
If you can’t tell I really enjoyed Daisy Jones and the Six and would totally recommend you read via the audiobook.
Daisy Jones & the Six is a work of art. Intoxicating. Seducing. Incredible. It is one of the best stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The moment I finished, I hit add to cart and purchased a physical copy so I could experience it all again in another format. Refusing to let go of Daisy.
All I will say is that you show up for your friends on their hardest days. And you hold their hand through the roughest parts. Life is about who is holding your hand and, I think, whose hand you commit to holding.
