Inside the Magic of The Lost Witch by Paige Crutcher
The Lost Witch feels like the perfect witchy read for fall. Paige Crutcher delivers an atmospheric story filled with powerful women, haunting magic and the reminder that finding your way home is sometimes the most perilous journey of all. This is a book filled to the brim with folklore, romance and suspense. A tale that lingers long after the final page.
At the heart of it all is Brigid Heron—a witch, healer and devoted servant to her Goddess, Brighid. She is the protector of Evermore, safeguarding her people and keeping watch over the lough, a place brimming with chaos and dangerous magic. She is the emotional core, a character both strong and deeply vulnerable. But when the mysterious god Luc tempts her with the one thing she desires most—a child— all bets are off, though Brigid hesitates, she ultimately accepts. But the gift comes at a devastating cost. When her daughter Dove falls ill, Brigid turn to forbidden magic to save her, unleashing a curse that sweeps both mother and child into tragedy. To protect Dove, Brigid strikes a bargain that casts her a century into the future.
Atmosphere & Writing Style
Crutcher’s prose is lyrical, weaving together history, myth and magic until Evermore itself feels alive. Though it opens slowly, it is layered with detail before pulling you into the storm of the plot. The pacing may take some patience at first, but once the threads connect, the story grips like a spell.
The setting of Evermore is as much a character as Brigid is herself. It is steeped in Irish history and folklore, full of secrets Brigid unknowingly helped shape. Alongside her descendants, Finola and Ophelia, Brigid must face the chaos she once unleashed. These women remind her that even when you feel alone, you never truly are. Love, family and strength is always within reach. And then there is Luc—dangerous, magnetic and utterly impossible to forget, Luc. Though Brigid longs to hate him, his devotion is undeniable, and their chemistry is one of the novel’s most intoxicating threads.
Extended Thoughts & Critique
I loved following Brigid’s journey—from self-imposed solitude to opening herself up to love, hope and belonging. The tension between Brigid and Luc is masterfully written; their bond is both a temptation and a lifeline, making it impossible not to root for them. I have to admit The Lost Witch wrapped around my heart, pulling me deeper into the characters’ struggles and desires.
If there was one gap, it was the relationship between Brigid and Dove. Brigid sacrifices a lot for Dove, and while Dove’s illness and diary drive the story forward, I craved more depth in their connection. More moments of Brigid desperately trying to reach her daughter would have added another layer of heartbreak and urgency. Even so, the story’s magic and themes of sacrifice, family, and love left me deeply moved.
The Lost Witch is a book that you MUST add to your Fall TBR. And whether you decide to pick a physical copy, read it on your Kindle or decide to devour the audiobook this witchy read will transport you into a world where you won’t help but forget your reading.
