Rate the Romance
Mile High (Windy City Series, 1) by Liz Tomforde
Words can’t even begin to capture how much I adored this series!
Stevie has officially claimed a spot as one of my all-time favorite main characters. Her presence lit up every page!
I get the hype with this one! It’s a super real romance, which can be surprisingly hard to find. The hockey-playing hero with a bad reputation has a lot of heart and defies playboy tropes. While dealing with body confidence issues, our heroine is powerful and confident in other aspects of her life.
The plus-size representation, the diversity, the candid discussions about therapy and mental health, the witty banter, the spice, the romance—everything was chef’s kiss. Goodbye, world.
I loved the inclusion of family relationships because, let’s be real, they affect your romantic relationships. And surprisingly, I didn’t mind that things started with a simple hookup.
If you’re looking for a rock-solid hockey romance and are willing to overlook the slightly clunky writing at the beginning, this is something you need to pick up.
bridesmaid for hire by meghan quinn
I adored Bridesmaid for Hire! It was entertaining, charming, and filled with fantastic characters. Maggie and Brody’s antagonistic relationship was a highlight—I couldn’t get enough of their verbal sparring and watching it morph into something more. The layers of their history, the humor, the drama, and the thrilling build-up to their romance had me hooked. Plus, the hilarious scenes had me cracking up non-stop. This was an incredible read!
The Anti-hero (The Goode Brothers Series, 1) by Sara Cate
The Anti-Hero was fantastic. As the first story in the Goode Brothers series, it had me riveted from start to finish.
The plot is unique and well-written, taking us on an unexpected journey with Adam, whose religious life quickly unravels when he catches his preacher father in a sex club.
The dynamic between Adam and Sage was fascinating. What began as a fake relationship to tarnish his churchboy reputation soon blossomed into something deeper.
Adam’s struggle with his identity and his quest for revenge on his father is compelling, especially as he grapples with his growing feelings for Sage. She’s nothing like the girls he was taught to like—with her tattoos, pink hair, and a job at a sex club—but his transformation throughout the book is incredible to witness.
The story offers a perfect blend of drama, emotional turmoil, angst, banter, humor, and scorching hot steam. It’s an age gap, fake relationship, opposites-attract tale that serves as a fantastic start to the series. I can’t wait for more and highly recommend this novel!
On the Darker Side of Love
That Sik Luv by Jescie Hall
When asked about my favorite stalker romance book, my answer is always That Sik Luv. This book hits all the right notes for me when it comes to dark romance.
At the start, we meet Briony, who’s ambitiously climbing the ranks in her church. Her life takes a twisted turn when she starts receiving mysterious messages from an unknown stalker, Aero.
Briony’s critical thinking throughout the story kept me hooked, while Aero’s complexity intrigued me from the get-go. Watching both characters evolve was a thrilling ride I never wanted to end. Their love is toxic, twisted, and full of red flags—and I LOVED every bit of it.
I’ve never read anything quite like this book. The reason behind the stalking, the behavior of the characters, and the setting create a magical combination I couldn’t get enough of.
If you have triggers, be sure to check them before diving in. The list is longer than your weekly grocery order!
Saving Scarlett (Survivor & Savior Duet, 1) by C.A. Varian
You need to read this book! I couldn’t put it down. Scarlett is such a strong woman, enduring and surviving her husband’s abuse. She’s a true survivor. And Bane, oh Bane, the tough-as-nails assassin with a hidden soft side. Their chemistry is off the charts!
This book has everything: Mafia, suspense, “touch her, you die” vibes, kidnapping, murder, secrets, and a HEA!! I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to read it again.
Liars Lik Us (Morally Gray Series, 1) by J.T. Geissinger
If you haven’t read JT, what are you waiting for?
This story is packed with twists and turns and is SO entertaining! The heat is off the charts with very sexually explicit scenes that were a bit too graphic at times (just my opinion). However, the story itself made the read well worth it.
Callum and Emery are a married couple like no other. These two characters are incredibly memorable, and their non-stop witty banter is off the charts! Callum is enigmatic, charismatic, generous to a fault, sexy, and caring—all wrapped into a man you will swoon over. Emery is a stand-on-your-own-two-feet type of girl who gets drawn into the vortex of Callum’s unusual proposition.
Then the wild roller coaster ride of revelations begins, and let me tell you, it’s one crazy, unforgettable journey. The communication between these two will have you laughing and grinning from ear to ear. Masterfully written!
Fantastical Fantasy
The Veiled Kingdom (The Veiled Kingdom Series, 1) Holly Renee
DACRE IS EVERYTHING!!! Everyone is going to be obsessed with Dacre…
Wow. I am blown away. This book easily makes my top read of the year. If you want a book you won’t want to put down then you need to add The Viled Kingdom to your TBR list!!
This fantasy has some light world-building, magic, hate-to-love romance, top-tier banter, and a possessive MMC, you are going to freaking LOVE it.
I’m so excited for the next book because the plot is just SO ADDICTING, and I need to know what happens next!
The Grace of Kings (The Dandelion Dynasty Series, 1) by Ken Liu
It is always interesting to see books that have extremely mixed reviews. I understand why this doesn’t work for a few but it worked so well for me.
The Grace of Kings is a fascinating and intricate political fantasy that resonated with me, despite its mixed reviews. The story centers on two men, Kuni and Mata, who begin as friends and allies against the emperor but eventually become adversaries, each striving to shape Dara according to their vision.
The novel is rich in strategy and planning, likened to moving pieces on a chessboard. Dara is a land in turmoil, with leaders and gods controlling the chaos. Despite the heavy political intrigue, the story remains engaging and never boring, with each character playing a crucial role in the overarching plot.
Kuni, a poor troublemaker with potential, genuinely cares about Dara. He meets Jia, a wealthy woman who defies her parents to marry him. Together, they form a powerful and realistic partnership. Jia’s intelligence and resourcefulness complement Kuni, helping him become a better person. Their relationship, though not perfect, realistically portrays the struggles and growth they experience amidst the chaos of war and separation.
Wings of Ink (Wings of Ink Series, 1) by Angelina J. Steffort
Angelina Steffort has crafted a captivating fantasy story with Wings of Ink, blending romance and twists that make it hard to put down. Her writing draws you in effortlessly, presenting a mature retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
The protagonists, Ayna and Myron, both carry complex traumas, which Steffort skillfully explores throughout the book. Adding political intrigue and the unique world of the Crows, Wings of Ink transcends a simple fairytale.
Overall, this amazing romantasy is a page-turner, highly recommended for fans of the genre.
Travel Back in Time
The Echo of Old Books by Barabara Davis
Echo of Old Books: A Novel is a literary gem that intricately weaves a rich tapestry of characters, plot, and history. From start to finish, the novel captivates with masterful storytelling and unforgettable personalities.
The characters are wonderfully crafted, each bursting with depth and personality, making them come alive with their unique quirks, dreams, and vulnerabilities. Readers form genuine connections with them, eagerly following their journeys.
The plot is intriguing, intertwining the past and present in a dance of mystery and revelation. Meticulously crafted twists and turns keep readers on the edge of their seats, making it impossible to put the book down. Each chapter unfolds like a new piece of a beautifully complex puzzle, keeping readers engaged and eager to see how it all comes together.
The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman
The Bright Sword offers a refreshing take on the King Arthur legend, blending historical details with delightful modern anachronisms. The protagonist, Collum, is an orphan mistreated at a manor on the island of Mull. After demanding sword training, he leaves for Camelot to join the Knights of the Round Table, only to find Arthur has fallen and the knights are mostly gone.
The narrative alternates between past and present, exploring the histories of the remaining knights and Collum’s journey towards self-respect and wisdom. The story, rich in myth and magic, balances humor and love with the brutality of fear, self-loathing, and the lust for power.
The Bright Sword rejuvenates a timeless tale with modern sensibilities, thoughtfully exploring universal struggles that resonate across all eras.
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
This book is a testament to meticulous research, vividly depicting the hardships and prejudices of its time, particularly for women. It prompts readers to reflect on the past and appreciate how far things have come, while also considering what hasn’t changed as much as expected.
Martha, the strong and bold protagonist, is a standout character. Her courage, intellect, and advocacy for women’s voices make her an inspiring figure. Her relationship with Ephraim, shown through glimpses over the years, is heartwarming. Ephraim is endearing as a man, husband, and provider, and their family life is beautifully portrayed.
Despite a slower pace for a mystery and occasional confusion with some characters, the book deeply resonated with me, earning a solid 5 stars. Don’t miss the author’s note! This was my first Ariel Lawhon read, but it definitely won’t be my last.
On the edge of your seat
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter
This was one of the hardest books I’ve ever read, with trigger warnings for almost every awful thing imaginable: violent rape, sexual assault, suicide, graphic violence, murder, and torture. At times, I wasn’t sure I could continue, but the gripping writing kept me hooked as I needed to know how it would end.
It’s my first Karin Slaughter book, and while I’m eager to read more, I might need a break due to how emotionally taxing this one was. The story focuses on two estranged sisters, Claire and Lydia, whose past resurfaces after Claire’s husband is murdered.
The book is incredibly intense, with graphic depictions of torture that made my stomach churn. It’s not for the faint of heart, but the edge-of-your-seat thriller kept me engaged from page 100 to the end. By the conclusion, I was in tears for the family. This thriller has left me emotionally drained in a way I’ve never experienced before.
Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica
Mary Kubica’s Local Woman Missing is a gripping thriller that keeps readers guessing until the very end. Set in a seemingly peaceful community, the story revolves around the disappearance of two women, Shelby Tebow and Meredith Dickey, along with Meredith’s young daughter, Delilah.
Narrated from multiple perspectives—family members, friends, neighbors, and a mysterious stranger—the novel builds suspense and keeps readers piecing together clues from different angles. Kubica excels in depicting the emotional impact of the disappearances, capturing the families’ desperation, the police’s frustration, and the community’s growing fear.
The book is filled with unexpected twists and turns that continually shift the narrative, ensuring you remain on the edge of your seat. Despite the multiple viewpoints, Kubica creates well-developed, relatable characters with realistic flaws and vulnerabilities. The story moves quickly, with short chapters that make it easy to read in one sitting.
Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak
I could NOT put this book down! It was such a steady-paced read that held my attention throughout. I was so creeped out that I ended up finishing most of it during the day and even made my husband check the bedroom because I thought I heard a noise. My senses were on high alert.
The book was riveting and thoroughly enjoyable until Chapter 25, where the truth began to unfold. At that point, the story took a turn that felt off the rails for me, as the characters’ actions seemed inconsistent.
Despite that, I recommend the book for its creepy drawings and suspenseful atmosphere. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a steadily paced, heart-thrilling read.
