Hayden always wondered what it would be like to have a family. She just never expected to find it with five mysterious strangers who have more secrets than she could ever imagine. This is the captivating premise of “Twilight of Embers.”
In Tessa Hale’s enchanting paranormal romance novel, the protagonist’s journey to Evergreen University on a premed scholarship quickly takes a thrilling detour. Amongst the distractions on campus, she encounters a diverse group of enigmatic men. A charming football star, a tortured soul, a protective broken boy, a generous billionaire, and a brilliant professor. Who makes her feel a sense of belonging she hasn’t known since her parents’ tragic deaths.
As love blossoms amidst danger and intrigue, she discovers that sometimes falling in love can put you right in the line of fire.
“These kinds of bonds are rare for our kind. But it’s why we all feel so drawn to each other. The Universe has destined it.”
To be honest, I don’t quite remember the reason for me picking up Twilight of Embers. I was probably searching through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited library looking for a reverse harem that I could sink my teeth into. And, came across Twilight of Embers. I am so glad I did because I ATE THIS BOOK UP! Quickly devouring both Twilight of Embers, and immediately going into book 2, Midnight of Ashes. Now, after reading these (the third and final book hasn’t been released yet) I have to go back and read all of Tessa’s previous works. I think I’m going to start with Spark of Fate. What do you think?
Title: Twilight of Embers (Dragons of Ember Hollow, 1)
Author: Tessa Hale
Genre: Why Choose, Reverse Harem, Epic Fantasy Romance
Star Rating: 5 stars
Spice Rating: 2 chili peppers
Hayden arrives at college in Ember Hollow unaware that magic exists and immediately crosses paths with Knox, the golden retriever football player who instantly recognizes her uniqueness. The romance involves him and four others, including one of her professors and a billionaire. They’re all so protective and possessive, and I was utterly smitten.
“You will always have a choice, Little Flame. But know that we were made to love you!
Honestly, these dragon shifters could burn me alive and I would sit there and be engulfed by the flames. Maybe even throw in a thank you Daddy with my last breath, before I flutter away as ash. Why choose is one of my favorite subgenres and if you add fated mates, I will be salivating and jumping to read that book.
Each relationship is uniquely crafted and given ample time to develop individually with the heroine. The story is packed with action, suspense, danger, and intrigue.
From the beginning of the story, I was immediately invested in the plot and characters. Hayden is so determined and strong and despite her trauma is hell-bent on having a good outcome.
Although the setting is college it doesn’t feel like the characters and the story is too young. With pacing that is perfection. Keeping you engaged and wanting to turn the page.
Great tension builds up in the Twilight of Embers pages that builds even further with some of the mates in Midnight of Ashes. Especially because some of the guys have less than great experiences with romance in the past. In addition, one is her professor and doesn’t want to lose his job (it’s an excuse he doesn’t need that damn job). There is also tension plot-wise. With the start of the prologue, you are wound tight for what this means for Hayden. The danger tightens coming so close time and again.
“What do you think it would be like to have five men devoted to your every need?”
I also am a sucker for a book that will let me into the male main character’s head (I love being in a man’s head). So, having those POVs only weighted the experience for me. You understand them and get to know them in a way that if you were the female main character you would combust with lust (and eventually love).
While, Hale masterfully weaves a tale of passion, danger, and the magical bond of found family. By no means is Twilight of Embers a perfect story. Even though it is the start of a series, it isn’t epic and unique in the premise. At times, it feels a little “insta lovey” (part of that I think has to do with them being fated mates). And, there isn’t any world-building. But these few moments don’t add a terrible hindrance to the story. Beyond that, both Twilight of Embers and Midnight of Ashes are a great time and worth the read.
If you love The Bonds that Tie, The Witch Walker series, or even A Ruin of Roses then you should check out the Dragons of Ember Hollow series. The first two books are out now on Kindle Unlimited. But, make sure you return for book 3. It is due to be released on July 19th.
