Thoughts on Butcher and Blackbird
Meet the infamous duo, the Butcher of Boston and the Orb Weaver, better known as Rowan Kane and Sloane Sutherland —serial killers with their own twisted sense of camaraderie. What started as a casual agreement in a dimly lit booth one fateful 3 am has transformed into an annual ritual, a peculiar competition that goes beyond the conventional definition of a game.
It’s not just about winning or losing; it’s about pushing each other to extremes, summoning both the best and the worst in Sloane and Rowan. Since that night, they’ve entangled themselves in a web of challenges, continually testing the boundaries of their dark partnership.
But is there a true winner in this macabre competition, or are Sloane and Rowan unwittingly playing a much grander game, one whose rules are far more complex than they could have ever imagined? As the Butcher and the Orb Weaver navigate the shadows, the question remains: Will they discover the true stakes of their sinister connection, or are they mere pawns in a game whose magnitude transcends their understanding?
“Killing bound us together, and it’s a compulsion neither of us can live without. This need, and now this game between us, consumes me as much as she does.”
I had some Audible credits to burn so on a whim I decided to listen to Butcher + Blackbird. This was the absolute BEST decision I have ever made! And with the fact that Joe Arden does the voice of Rowan, it was the easiest SOLD I have ever shouted. I can say with full confidence that Butcher + Blackbird was… is…EVERYTHING!
Although this is a romantic comedy it is STILL A DARK ROMANCE. Please check Trigger Warnings (you are responsible for your own media consumption). That being said, you will go through all of the emotions with Butcher and Blackbird. There are moments that you will laugh hysterically, question whether the vanilla ice cream is 100% vanilla ice cream (if you know you know), and shed tears at how beautiful moments within the story are.
“I didn’t gouge the eyes out, Butcher. I plucked them. Delicately. Like a lady”
Every time those two were in the spotlight, I had a grin plastered on my face, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Together, they were straight-up iconic but even solo, they were killing it. Sloane? Sloane is such a badass. She of course is a serial killer who has no trouble getting her hands dirty. She is legendary, turning her victims into twisted art projects and maps. Organized AF, —total lone wolf/black cat vibes.
Now, Rowan? Oh, he’s the wild card, all about strength, punches, and a dash of blood. He’s all over the place, and he’s living for it. Rowan is a man you will see the ref throwing flags on the play but you will kick them away and pretend you didn’t see it! It’s like they’re from different planets, but when you throw them together, it just clicks. Sloane’s the cool, collected strategist, and Rowan’s the unhinged, flirty golden retriever. Opposites, yeah, but damn, they make so much sense together. It’s like chaos found its match in order, and it’s one hell of a ride.
“I would kill for you, and I have. I would do it again, every damn day. I’d turn myself inside out for you. I would die for you. I don’t just like you, Sloane, and you fucking know it.”
The love story? Oh, it’s top-notch. Picture this slow-burning romance between two unlikely protagonists who, let’s face it, aren’t your typical leads. Their connection is an electric charge, a wild and untamed force that veers into the animalistic—a primal, barely controllable desire. United by an irresistible magnetism. Life gets kinda lonely for them like they’re the only ones navigating this crazy world. And then bam! They stumble upon each other, and it’s like, “Whoa, you get me.” It’s that feeling of finally finding someone who sees right through you and understands the weird stuff you’ve got going on inside. They’ve basically hit the jackpot of finding their perfect match. It’s not just romance; it’s like they’ve discovered the missing piece of their crazy puzzle.
This wasn’t just some tale; it was like getting strapped into a rollercoaster. Picture this: a movie playing out right in front of me, or better yet, like I’m that nosy fly on the wall soaking in every crazy moment. The way this story was spun, even the tiniest things felt like they deserved a spotlight. It’s not just unique; it’s like a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Now, a story this wild could’ve easily gone off the rails, but Brynne Weaver? She owned it and made it her masterpiece. This was my first dance with Brynne’s storytelling, and let me tell you, “impressed” doesn’t even cut it. It’s like she’s got some storytelling magic up her sleeve, and I’m here for it. This was definitely a 5-star read!!!
