Hello Friends! It’s Dominique. Welcome or Welcome back to my blog. Today I wanted to bring you something that I will start doing every month on my blog, the Mid-Month Book Spotlight. Every month I will bring you a book that I wish to shine our light on. In some cases, they will be books that will be released soon — like this month’s, or they will be books that have already been released. But always books that I have read myself.

Review:
Blake was an average teenager, she had a normal teenage life, bullied by those around her due to being different. But Blake was different, she is a Voyant. Being a Voyant didn’t make the fact that she just wanted to disappear and live her life, any easier. Taking a moment to step out of the shadows was really hard on Blake.
Although she used her gifts quite regularly she didn’t want to get too involved in other people’s life, chalking it up that if she got involved then it would be changing the future. In walks Nicholas who shows her that she can be more, do more. That she can use her gifts for the betterment of others. The fact that he was gorgeous wouldn’t make that much of a difference, would it?! As Blake uses her gifts more, murders happen all around her, and it is up to her and The Nine to determine who is killing off innocent people.
The story is set in a modern-day world, so the world-building is already pretty fleshed out, there are some added elements to continue with the scenery and give descriptions as the story moves along.
Book Spotlight Additional Thoughts
This was a top read for me! I had to make this a book for the mid-month book spotlight. I couldn’t put it down. It is incredibly creative. It gives nods to other Fantasy books, while completely holding its own as something new. I would have finished it in one day if I didn’t have to do the necessary things of sleep and eat. Throughout the story, I screamed WHHAAATTT? Gasping and feeling the frustration between Blake and the other characters, as she tries to make her way through a world that she’s just been introduced to. I am hoping that there is a sequel. As the story concluded it seemed as if there was more to tell– I won’t say what as it was a part of the story, quite a cliffhanger.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Owl Hollow Press for giving me this ARC to review. This will be released on October 11, 2022. You can pre-order this here.
Dark of Night by Barbara Nickless
Rating: 3
Review:
In addition to The Nine: Origins, the other book I really wanted to do a book spotlight this month on Dark of Night by Barbara Nickless. Dark of Night is the next book in the Evan Wilding series and while I did not read the initial book this one totally can be a stand-alone. I loved this mystery about Dr. Evan Wilding.
Elizabeth Lawrence is found dead, and although she is dying, what is made to look like a sooner rather than later death on her part is found questionable by Dr. Evan Wilding, Elizabeth’s friend. Evan knows El and knows she is a fighter of a woman who wouldn’t just end her life, especially by the means by which the killer does it. As Dr. Wilding helps the Chicago PD with their investigation of El’s murder Evan uncovers many plots that may mean that his friend isn’t quite who he thought her to be.
Book Spotlight Additional Thoughts
As I mentioned before this is the second book in the series, it was so well written that I didn’t feel as if I was missing out on things. The story is fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did guess who the killer was towards the end of the story, putting together all of the clues that Evan and Addie found. There also was a twist that I would have never seen coming and added to the intrigue of the story.
One thing that I didn’t like about the story was the noting of the fact that he was a dwarf. It was mentioned in his initial description and then mentioned countless amounts of times beyond that, and not just in the “little man” insults but mentioned every time he did or said something. While part of it was that Dr. Wilding was self-conscious to an extent, I find it to be overkill.
I would like to thank the publisher Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for giving me this ARC to review. This book will be released on November 15, 2022. You can pre-order this here
