Forget Me Not Synopsis
It was supposed to be a harmless hustle, a survival instinct in the playbook of Rhea Thorn, a self-proclaimed survivor.
Or so I thought…
A seemingly inconsequential one-night stand turned into a dangerous game when I swiped his wallet and vanished with the dawn. Little did I know, I had just conned a psycho.
The aftermath? Seventeen missed calls and a shattered window bearing an ominous note:
“You can keep what you stole, but I get you in return.”
Now, he’s everywhere, a shadowy presence blurring the lines between right and wrong, his sultry blue eyes a constant temptation.
Alaric vowed I’d never forget him.
And with each passing moment, I’m beginning to fear he might be right. Brace yourself for a thrilling journey into the heart of obsession and desire.
Thoughts on Forget Me Not!
He loves you but will he run over someone and kill them just because he made you cry!?
Forget Me Not is a dark romance. Please make sure you check trigger warnings you are responsible for your own media consumption!
Rhea is a woman on the perpetual run. Leading a life where she and her mother had to beg, borrow, and steal to survive. Life on the run began when her mother snuck away under the cover of night after overhearing Rhea’s father make a deal to sell her off once she hits 21 (at this point Rhea is a toddler).
Throughout the years Rhea has had what she likes to consider a guardian angel watching out for her. A man in a black Mercedes essentially stalking her. Helping her when she needs it but allowing her to make her own decisions. Because if you know Rhea the last thing she will ever accept is to be tied down. She is a resilient and independent woman trying her damndest to weather life’s storms. Determined to find stability after a tumultuous history of swindling alongside her now-departed mother. This leaves Rhea to take care of herself with the guidance of her Uncle Dex. What she wants more than anything is a “normal” life. Hanging out and making friends her age. So she decides to settle down in the small town of Lockhaven.
“Everywhere she goes, I find her. Because much like she will never forget me, I cannot forget her.”
As a survivor, she navigates the challenges that come her way, each step unraveling a past shrouded in darkness. Throughout the book, the details of her troubled history are subtly revealed, painting a picture of a journey marked by conflicts and emotional turbulence. Rhea’s quest for a settled life is a testament to her strength and the transformative power of resilience in the face of adversity.
And then there’s Alaric. A walking red flag, red flag. Albeit from the shadows, Alaric is always there to watch over Rhea. Alaric is the man you don’t want to be intrigued by but you have no choice. His smile is captivating with ocean blue eyes, smelling like the finest leather and mahogany.
Alaric is a sociopath (let’s not mix words). He is possessive and demanding but also very nurturing and sweet. A smooth talker. You don’t want to like him but the more that you read you see why he is just so damn likable.
For me the biggest issue with Forget Me Not wasn’t the writing style but the lack of anything happening for the first 60% of the way through. I was bored through the majority of the time. Almost calling it quits.
When I say nothing happening I don’t necessarily mean in the action part of the storyline. Yes, Rhea was stealing and catching the eye of people. There were flashbacks of moments that triggered Rhea. Whether it be sight, smell, or action of another. I mean that beyond those moments that were sprinkled in, the story wasn’t engaging.
“My girl is a wild one. A little crazy. Ruthless at heart. She keeps me on my fucking toes. And I don’t think I could love her any more than I do right now.”
What turned the story around was Alaric! His “side quests” locating various people and doing work behind the scenes made it worth the read. You are trying to figure out Alaric because he is such an enigma. When he comes in full view and he has interactions with Rhea you see the tension and her resistance. Because she too has the word run blaring through her mind but because he is so alluring you want to unravel him a little more.
The wit of Rhea and the tension between the two also add a +1 to Forget Me Not. You root for Alaric while wondering how being so smart Rhea can’t figure out all the little nuances he is presenting.
When considering pacing, the initial start to the book is slow. Adding to the boredom you feel. As it ramps up and unveils more of the plot it hits a sweet spot and is perfection from that point forward.
In addition, there is a twist at the end of the book that you won’t see coming and again, adding a +1 to the story. By the end of the book, I gave it a solid 3.75/4 out of 5 stars. Overall it was a good read.
