We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
Many don’t know that Audible is an Amazon product, but did you know there’s a whole world of alternatives waiting to be explored? I read A LOT, somewhere in the realm of 100 books per year. And that for the most part isn’t including audiobooks!
And as someone who wants to kick the Amazon habit (or at least in some way cost them money), finding ways to get books for either free or cheaper is in my best interest. So, let’s ditch the Audible routine and dive into fresh possibilities with these top-notch Audible alternatives.
Best Audible Alternatives Free and Paid For
Libro.fm
The point, at least for most of us, is to ditch Amazon altogether. Getting rid of their monopoly of the publishing industry, and supporting independent bookstores in the process.
Libro.fm is a great Audible alternative as it is parallel to the model of Audible. But has the direct benefit of supporting independent bookstores. Libro.fm is a subscription-based program (around $15 per month), and in return, you get a monthly book credit where you can keep the books you purchase!
Outside of the exclusives that Audible has, Libro.fm has the same wide range of books to choose from. Sometimes they even have books that Audible doesn’t have!
Plus, if you join Libro.fm and use code CHOOSEINDIE you will get a free audiobook!
Audiobooks.com
Stephen King once said, “Books are uniquely portable magic”. This quote is proudly on the Audibooks.com website and we couldn’t agree more.
Audiobooks.com allows you to pay a monthly subscription in exchange for credits to use on their site. They often have “Flash Deals”. Where you can get 2 books for the price of 1 credit. And, they also have a list of discounted audiobooks to choose from. Check their “deals” page often to see what they currently have for sale.
Plus, when you sign up, you get a free trial. This trial includes 1 free book, plus 2 bonus books from their VIP selection. When you decide to continue you will get 1 audiobook and 1 bonus VIP book for just $14.95!
That’s a great deal! I am an ABC affiliate but this doesn’t cost you anything!
Everand (formerly Scribd)
Everand is another subscription-based audiobook service. The membership fee is $11.99 per month. This includes access to our library of bestsellers, award winners, obscure indie titles, and reader favorites. Everand will also give you personalized recommendations and special collections assembled by our editors to help you find books they think you’ll love. The subscription includes a 30-day free trial so you can read what you want how you want!
Everand’s vast library includes ebooks and audiobooks from renowned publishers and independent authors alike, along with podcasts, magazine articles, sheet music, and so much more. From bestsellers and new releases to Originals content, Everand is the home of stories and knowledge for every reader. I love that for us!

Hoopla
With busy schedules, we don’t always have time to head to the local library. But with things like Hoopla and Libby (we will get to Libby in a second), it is all right at your fingertips!
Hoopla allows you to discover a world of entertainment! With just your library card, you can dive into audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV shows, magazines, and music wherever you have a screen—whether it’s your computer, phone, car, or even your TV.
Hoopla syncs seamlessly across all your devices, allowing you to stream your favorite titles instantly or whenever the mood strikes. Plus, most titles can be downloaded to your phone or tablet for offline enjoyment.
With Hoopla, you get access to a vast array of content, available in more places than any other digital library platform, and best of all, it’s completely free thanks to your public library! Keep in mind that titles may vary based on your library’s catalog. There is also NO subscription fee. Happy exploring!

Libby
Libby along the lines of Hoopla. It is access to your public library ( and even your nonpublic library). As long as you have a library card you can have access to Libby.
Libby gives you access to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and so much more. Their parent company OverDrive is also on this list.
Some benefits to having the Libby app on things like your phone, tablet, or computer include: reading across devices, offline access, you can send books to your Kindle if that is your preferred device and you can easily listen in your car.
Libby is completely FREE. Every library caters to its community in unique ways, offering different digital products. That’s why I appreciate Libby’s feature that allows me to use multiple library cards. Whenever one library doesn’t have the audiobook I’m looking for, I simply check another library before exploring other resources. It’s a convenient way to access a wider range of content across different libraries.
This is your sign to sign up for a library card. Even if the library isn’t in your area.
