Goodreads Choice Award Nominees: Discovering the Best of the Best
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
Hello Friends! It’s Dominique. Welcome or welcome back to my blog. Today’s post is going over the Goodreads Choice Award Nominees specifically for the fantasy section. I will touch on some of the other genres like romance, and mystery/thrillers, but I wanted to start to let you know what books are up to vote on in the fantasy genre, and have a discussion on what books I thought were going to be on the list, what was a shock, and then branch out from there. So let’s get started!
Here are the Goodreads Fantasy Nominees
Thoughts
When it comes to the Goodreads list, some of these I am not surprised at all are on this list (The Lost Metal, House of Sky and Breath, The Golden Enclaves). It may be expected, almost obvious that these titles to be included among the nominees on the Goodreads list. There are a few on here that I am surprised are on the list. If you want to hear more about these titles, my thoughts, ratings, etc. let me know in the comments and I will make an additional post. But regardless, I was a little disappointed that some are missing from this list (given that is the name of the game some titles that you really wished were on this list aren’t named).
Fantasy is one of those genres, that can be so many different things, I am glad that we see some variety in this list.
What did I think would be on this Goodreads list?
The Lost Metal, Crescent City, Babel, I think most of us knew that these would show up on the list. This really wasn’t a surprise at all. These authors are very well known, their works are incredible, and are super hyped throughout the year. Beyond that, I did have Elektra on the list. I have noticed throughout previous years, retellings, especially those of Greek origin end up on the list.
Also predicted, is that Daughter of the Moon Goddess would be on the list for the year. This story was just a wonder. It can be a great gateway for those who don’t read fantasy, with the mass appeal of the story. It was beautifully written, engaging story. If The Daughter of the Moon Goddess wasn’t on the list Sue Lynn Tan would have been snubbed for the nomination.
Additionally, I also guessed that The Atlas Six would be there. Although, The Atlas Paradox made it before the cut-off date, it didn’t make the list. One of The Atlas Six‘s advantaged is being a lot of people’s excitement after reading the self-published copy (then traditionally published after a mass following on TikTok). Additionally, an adaptation which gave it major exposure.
Your Thoughts?!
What are your thoughts on books that go the self-published route initially and then turn traditional? Do you think that they should have the opportunity to be on this list (Legends & Lattes, The Atlas Six)? I think it is fine but it seems a little unfair as these titles had to pick up a fan base in order to be traditionally published.
Things like the Goodreads Choice are often popularity contests so when you have something that picks up its fan base and gains notoriety to then be traditionally published and added to the list, well it seems a little anti-climactic. It was initially published this year but then it is included this year because it was traditionally published.
One that I am surprised to not see on this list is Hunger of the Gods. Especially when Shadow of the Gods was on the list last year and it has been a super-hyped book this year. The characters are wonderful, the tone is similar to Shadow of the Gods, and it is more of what you would expect from the fantasy genre. It was a good release. You tend to see really grand stories not present on this list, and that’s okay.

Mystery/Thriller Nominees
Goodreads Nominees I want to get into
There are some that I want to get into but just haven’t had the time yet.
Within the YA(Young Adult) category I would love to read:
Anatomy a Love Story by Dana Schwartz, The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson, and The First to Die at the End by Adam Silveria.
And there are so many from the Fantasy YA section Bloodmarked, Cursed, The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea, The Ballad of Never After, Hotel Magnifique, These Twisted Bonds, This Woven Kingdom, and some others.
Those are the nominees and books I wanted to check out. Sound off in the comments! Vote here. Thanks for checking out this post.
